It is true that in years past, modern digital x-ray, CR and digital radiography (DR) systems were prohibitively expensive, running into the mid-six figure range. However, innovations in Web technology and the dramatic increases in the power of personal computers, accompanied by equally dramatic price drops, have made PAC RIS and other modern digital imaging solutions such as computed radiography and rad rooms more affordable than ever.  Today's digital Picture Archive and Communication and Radiography Information System (PAC RIS) can reside on a suitably-equipped personal computer.

As long as the PC being used has sufficient RAM (random access memory) and a high-end video card as well as sufficient processing power, it can be used as the basis of your PAC RIS or other digital imaging system. The largest investment is the extra hardware. A suitable video card can cost between $700 and $1000, but even so, PC capable of functioning as part of a PAC RIS digital imaging system should not cost in excess of $2500. The most expensive part of such as system is the video monitor, which must be of exceptionally high quality, high resolution and preferably with a large screen (1280 x 960 or greater). Even so,  the total cost of a modern digital X-Ray and medical imaging system should not exceed $5000 – which is very much within reach of virtually every clinic and private practice.
